Following in the footsteps of the earliest photographers who used double exposures to create mysterious 'spirit' images and later the surrealist photographers who used the technique to distort reality, this image is from my series ‘Gates of the Forest’ The series considers both our past incursions into and exploitation of local forests, as well as our current presence there. To create the images, I sought out man-made structures, buildings, and artefacts, reimagining them as if in some distant future—overwhelmed by the forest as it reclaims its hold on the land. The two images were combined in-camera on location.
