Using colour to reference the ‘beingness’ of the land

ABOUT TERRI:

Painter | Colour Explorer | Landscape Interpreter

Based in Healesville, Terri McMillan has been engaged in art throughout her life, finding greater focus for her practice over the past decade. With a background in teaching children and adults, Terri draws on her experiences to explore colour, light, and texture in her work.

Her artistic journey spans traditional religious iconography, tonal oil painting, and pastel studies, guided by mentors including Robert Gallagher, David Moore, and Janet Hayes. Terri’s approach is informed by Rudolf Steiner’s and Goethe’s Colour Theory and by observing the intuitive creativity of her students, which nurtured her own expressive practice.

In recent years, under the guidance of Ron Reynolds, she has focused on simplifying her compositions, using oil paints to capture the gesture of the landscape. Terri strives to evoke the “beingness” of the land—its ancient, immortal qualities — and the ephemeral nature of Australian sunlight, creating works that resonate with human emotion and a deep connection to place.
