ABOUT MICHAEL:
Writer of Ideas | Designer of Experience | Producer of Ephemeral Wonder
Michael Anderson is a writer, designer, and event producer whose multifaceted creative career spans architecture, stage design, academia, interiors, and storytelling. Trained in architecture (Honours), technical theatre (BFA, Boston), and cultural theory (postgrad), Michael’s career path has followed inspiration rather than convention — culminating in a Masters of Fine Arts and a decisive move to Healesville, where he bought an Alistair Knox house and abandoned his PhD in architectural history to live his muse.
As a designer, Michael’s work has graced television screens (including ABC and children’s drama), opera stages (including a world premiere at the Sydney Opera House), and theatre and dance productions across Australia and New Zealand. His event designs — fashion shows, festivals, launches, weddings, and concerts—are known for their immersive and playful sense of place. His award-winning interior architecture includes acclaimed hospitality and retail spaces, celebrated locally and internationally.
Michael’s collaborative energy also led to producing a concert series in Healesville with Khoi Bui, presenting monthly chamber music performances featuring internationally renowned musicians in an intimate local setting.
As a writer, Michael has published academic works on architecture and design, including a monograph with Oxford University Press. In recent years, his focus has shifted to the personal and poetic — writing for Yarra Magazine and The Bugatti Bulletin, where he records the people, places, and obsessions that colour his world. His topics range from gardens, cars, and music to memory, history, and homes — with ideas always at the heart.
A self-described “old white male with a privileged education,” Michael is both reflective and irreverent — an artist of evanescence, celebrating the beautiful absurdity of things not built to last.
