Mel brigg

Inspired by the vastness of this land

ABOUT MEL:

Painter of Spirit & Space | Storyteller of Landscape & Humanity

Mel Brigg has been painting professionally since 1970, beginning in South Africa and continuing for the past 31 years in Australia. Working primarily in acrylics, Mel explores a wide range of subjects — but it is the figurative presence within landscape that most often defines his work.

Deeply inspired by the diversity and intensity of the Australian interior, Mel’s paintings draw on the vastness of the land, its light, and the enduring spiritual presence of Indigenous culture. His works may evoke a sense of calm or unease — often shifting between the contemplative and the provocative.

“I draw inspiration from the interior regions of Australia. The vastness and intensity of light, combined with the spirituality of the Indigenous peoples, are a never-ending source of subject matter for me. What you see in a landscape may give you an overwhelming sense of peace, or it may threaten or intimidate you. I can paint an evocative landscape or I can make a graphic comment about social injustice, tragedy and the human condition.”

Whether addressing the rawness of the human experience or the beauty and mystery of the land, Mel Brigg’s work is emotionally charged and visually powerful.
