Clay is such a tactile medium...

with the passage of flame & smoke & combustibles, the surprises after firings are endless.

ABOUT LAURA:

Fire Whisperer | Ceramic Alchemist | Maker of Unique Earth and Flame Forms

Laura Windmill’s lifelong affair with clay began at age 14, and her passion for the medium and its unpredictable firing processes remains undiminished. Specialising in alternative firing techniques — such as saggar, pit, and raku firings — she embraces the drama of flame, smoke, and chemical reactions that create stunning, often surprising patterns, textures, and colours.

The natural environment deeply inspires Laura’s work. A journey to Central Australia revealed a desert palette of orange-red dirt, vibrant yellows, purples, rose reds, stark whites, and blacks—shades she seeks to capture in her Desert series using her signature saggar firing process. The remote Kimberley region, famous for its Boab trees, inspired her bottle shapes that blend desert colours with iconic tree forms.

Her Fire and Ice series reflects the rugged landscapes of New Zealand and Iceland — glaciers, volcanoes, snow, and rock — along with the raw power of bushfires and their impact on the land.

Raku firings add a rapid, elemental energy to her practice, producing vivid colours and striking contrasts between glazed surfaces and blackened clay. Each piece embodies a delicate balance between planned intention and the beautiful randomness of nature’s hand.

Laura’s ceramic creations are truly unique, unrepeatable works forged through fire, earth, and instinct.
