Creating realistic wildlife artwork with fibre to record the beauty of our threatened nature

ABOUT KATE:

Fibre Storyteller | Wildlife Sculptor | Maker from the Heart

Kate Taylor is a self-taught artist whose creative life has been shaped by lived experience and a love of making. In the 1980s, she ran a colourful wool shop in Healesville, designing vibrant jumpers that captured the joyful spirit of the era. After exploring many different mediums, it was in 2016 that Kate found her true creative home in fibre art — particularly needle felting and felt in all its forms.

Her work is inspired by the beauty of Australian birds and wildlife, often created with kind permission from photographers whose images spark her imagination. Every piece is made freehand — translated by eye from photograph to felt — capturing intricate detail and emotion in wool. Her practice has expanded to include 3D fibre sculpture, a meditative process that allows her to shape soft forms from wool fibre using only a barbed needle.

Creating from her home on the outskirts of Healesville, Kate works in a cosy studio corner where parrots visit her window and eagles circle overhead — constant reminders of the wild lives she brings into her art.

Following a successful solo exhibition at Little Fishes Gallery in Marysville, Kate’s work found an international audience through social media. One passionate collector in the USA continues to challenge her creativity with unique commissions — from a lifesize Bengal cat to a Kungfu kangaroo and mother-and-baby koalas.

In addition to fibre painting and sculpture, Kate also works in watercolour and pastel. She enjoys teaching needle felting to all ages and finds joy in creating pet portraits and one-of-a-kind commissions. A portion of every sale is donated to wildlife charities — closing the circle of connection between her art and its wild inspirations.
