Ernst Fries’ sculptures - crafted primarily in stainless steel and often seamlessly incorporating glass, granite, wood, or concrete - reflect his deep contemplation of the natural and built environment and world events. Clean, contemporary and conceptually open, his works invite the viewer to bring their meaning.
Over a remarkable six-decade career, Ernst was a passionate advocate for public art. He completed numerous commissions and public sculptures across Australia and Europe, with works held in national and international collections. Ernst passed away in March 2020, leaving behind a powerful legacy of beautifully constructed and thought-provoking sculpture.
